FAQ’s
How can yoga affect fertility?
Yoga can play a positive role in managing the ups and downs of trying to conceive. Exercises that improve blood and energy flow to reproductive organs are essential for fertility, releasing tension and stagnation in the hips and pelvic area. Ultimately, yoga improves your fertility by minimizing stress, thereby increasing the ability to conceive! While research is still being conducted on the direct effects of yoga for fertility, many studies have reported improved pregnancy rates for couples involved in mind-body programs such as yoga.
How often should I practice?
Yoga can either complement your existing fitness routine, or serve as your sole form of physical movement. Starting with just one session per week is a great place to be and will likely lead to more! The lasting “feel good” effects of yoga often translate into wanting to be on your mat more often. Whether your practice increases into small increments of 10-20 minutes a day, a full hour of movement, or just a few moments of mindfulness, yoga in all its varieties can be practiced as often as you’d like.
Is yoga safe during fertility treatments?
Engaging in yoga is ideal during fertility treatments (IVF & ART) as it’s considered one of the safest forms of exercise to help manage anxiety and stress, and supports your body for implantation. The key is to be with an experienced teacher who is well-versed in treatment cycles and to listen to your body; move slowly, breathe well and only move into what feels comfortable. Be sure to seek the advice of your health care provider before taking up any new forms of exercise and consult with Julie C. to customize your experience!
I’m new to yoga, what can I expect?
Being new to yoga is a wonderful place to be! As the saying goes, yoga is not for the flexible but for the willing; all backgrounds and bodies are welcome! Yoga is, after all, a philosophy of how to live well. By being guided through breathing exercises and a series of poses to unify your whole system, expect to feel calm, clear headed and like a better YOU.
Can I do yoga while on my period?
You CAN practice yoga on your period! In fact, it’s a great way to encourage the gentle downward flow of energy needed during this restful time. While more grounding, seated poses are recommended (as opposed to strenuous movement or heat-building exercises), a restorative yoga approach can ease cramping and heavy bleeding, reduce headaches and lower back pain associated with menstruation. Light movement and walking the first 1-3 or heavier days of your cycle is a perfect way to restore your overall energy.
What do I need to get started?
Minimal equipment is needed to get started in yoga! Grab a yoga mat and a small area where you won’t be interrupted and can move freely. Over time you might incorporate blankets, bolsters or yoga blocks as you feel they support you. Your body will thank you for light nourishment and hydration prior to practicing, and plan to be on your mat anywhere from 30-90mins depending on your session.
